THE FOUND FOOTAGE ARCHIVES

Found footage movies go by many other names: the mockumentary, cinéma vérité, first-person POV. Love 'em or hate 'em, this device has been part of the horror genre since the turn of the century. (Seriously!) The Blair Witch Project showed how so much could be done with so little, while Cloverfield proved you could go big – very big – using the format. Below is a definitive list of found footage flicks – from big budget to no budget; from all four corners of the world; from the released, to the unreleased; and the good, the bad, and everything in between. Keep in mind, I'll only be including films that tell their movies entirely (or most entirely) within the found footage format. For example, Blair Witch 1 will appear, but not Blair Witch 2, which uses a mixture of found footage and traditional narrative. (Additionally, I've had people nitpicking this list based on shooting techniques of some of the films included: i.e., found footage vs. a faux, sit-down, after-the-fact documentary. I am including both types, since both purport to be "real footage.")

So grab your infinite battery pack, leave your tripod at home, and start finding the footage of your choice below...

Country of Origin: U.S.
Studio/Video Label: Lionsgate Films
Synopsis: Director statement: "It's completely up to Lionsgate. Dan and I are ready to do it. We've been toying around with a sequel idea that we really like. It's just a matter of getting our schedules in line and having Lionsgate sign off on the idea. We've been ready to do a Blair Witch movie for a long time. We're as close as we've ever been to making it happen, but it's still not a guaranteed thing. Right now the idea has no first person in it at all, but we'll see. There's always room for new ideas to come in. The plan is to have [Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams] back. Harmless

Director: Rich Praytor
Year Made: 2012
Country of Origin: U.S.
Studio/Video Label: Anti-Jerking Off Films
Synopsis: In the film, we follow a young family whose patriarch has a burgeoning interest in both amateur videography and jacking off to people screwing, the latter of which gets he and his similarly-flesh-craving sons in some trouble when his seemingly innocuous "box of porn" begins to manifest its evils. "Where there was light, there's dark," explains the porn lover's wife, describing both the chilling presence and the hot interracial gang bang lingering about their porn box. The director himself describes the presence as "much like a poltergeist," but in this trailer you only see a bride waiting for a door to unlock and a scowling mom guarding a yeti cave, neither of whom seem all that much like a poltergeist, so I don't know. Perhaps the true evil is the sinful, insatiable pornographic desire that, with but a few hurried gestures of the hand, just seems to fade away, much like a poltergeist. Year Made: 2004
Country of Origin: U.S.
Studio/Video Label: 20th Century Fox
Synopsis: A handful of filmmakers looking for the fabled sea serpent of Loch Ness get a look at another sort of monster in this witty mock documentary. Under commission from producer and screenwriter Zak Penn, notoriously eccentric German filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to Scotland to shoot his latest film, a documentary called "The Enigma of Loch Ness" which examines the myth of the Loch Ness monster and its role in the collective unconsciousness of the Scottish people rather than attempting to capture and photograph the creature itself. As Herzog is shooting his film, another filmmaker, John Bailey, tags along to shoot a film about Herzog shooting a film using the provisional title "Herzog in Wonderland." While Herzog and Bailey ruffle one another's feathers, Herzog begins to suspect Penn hired his crew more for their ability to generate "real life drama" on camera rather than their skills, especially Kitana Baker, a supposed "sonar engineer" who happens to have been a model for Playboy. As the production falls into chaos, neither Herzog or Bailey are able to complete their projects, and a pair of editors are brought in to combine footage shot by both crews into a coherent whole.

Synopsis: Director statement: "I grew up in an area of Bedfordshire in the UK rich in legends of witchcraft and knew of a local ruin that had a history of black magic and the occult and always thought it had potential for a film. So I started doing some research. It wasn't long before an approach to the film was established. Something that contained a Zombie Diaries flavour, but which mixed it with a real legend and true accounts of Aleister Crowley-esque goings on up at an isolated ruined church. Clophill is a sleepy Bedfordshire village and was a famous occult landmark in the 1960s and 1970s. Even today you get scores of teenagers going up there to scare themselves every night. And I was surprised that no one had done a serious film on the place before. So I assembled a small crew and several real witnesses to events up there of both witchcraft and ghostly sightings. We spent a long weekend up at Clophill - interviewing locals, witnesses, and experts and conducting experiments at night, setting up cameras, Ouija boards, ghost boxes, all manner of bizarre contraptions to see if there really was anything to the legend. Within that framework, I also wrote in a dark story of the occult and paranormal, which Mike and I directed. So what you're seeing is a real mix of fact and fiction."

Willow Creek

Director: Bobcat Goldthwait
Year Made: 2012
Country of Origin: U.S.
Studio/Video Label: N/A
Synopsis: Another search for Bigfoot. "Bleeding Cool has talked to people involved and says that this particular found-footage film mixes satire and suspense, and 'is apparently rather driven by exploring the idea of bearing witness.'  The report also says that multiple characters in the film claim to have seen the mysterious beast and that their different accounts provide a source of conflict. Evidently that turns into an opportunity to make 'some observations on faith and religion.'  There’s a bit more detail — the film was shot in a very short amount of time, and mostly in sequence, with some parts right where the infamous Patterson-Gimlin bigfoot film was captured in California — but no real indication of play or anything else."

TEOS Review/Opinion: Had it not been for Bobcat's previous two wonderful movies, I would have written this off instantly. For now I will remain cautiously intrigued.

  3. Superb site!
I love found footage movies and always wanted to build list/resources in 1 place.
Your list is excellent starting point to do this.

I'm sure I've seen some movies which is not listed here, but currently I cannot remember anything besides this:

    The Atticus Institute (2015) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3280916/
^ saw it already and it was good!

If/when I will remember/find stuff I've seen and not listed here, I will make another comment here.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to comment. This list is woefully out of date - I honestly couldn't keep up with all the announcements of found footage films anymore. Thanks for the tip on The Atticus Institute, but you're about two days too late - I pre-ordered it over the weekend!

    2. Thanks for reply. Hmm, maybe you could at least put only short entries about new movies then (only title and perhaps imdb link)? That would greatly help me to find them.

Actually I didn't even know SO much found footage films exists. Now I'm trying to find those I havent seen already (based on this list) and watching like 1-2 films per day.

I totally understand time consuming nature of things like this. Since I am sort of movie fanatic myself and I do have vast collection of various films my dream is to create my personal semi-private database of all stuff I have. But its only a dream. I totally dont have time to do it now :(

    3. I wouldn't go too crazy in trying to hunt all of them down. Many of them have nothing more than Facebook pages, which leads me to believe they are ideas or concepts for films that never took off for whatever reasons - probably lack of financing.

  4. Fantastic list! I thought I'd watched them all until coming across this list of lesser known FF.
