Not sure why, but this feels like something Sam Raimi would have made somewhere between A Simple Plan and The Gift - before he completely sold his soul to overblown studio nonsense. Maybe it's the presence of Lorna Raver making me think that...TEOShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05665899455536414080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4705731426489274324.post-2441550053714079052014-09-10T18:20:17.509-04:002014-09-10T18:20:17.509-04:00I completely agree with your assessment of THE CAL...I completely agree with your assessment of THE CALLER. This is nifty little genre piece that deserves a higher profile. I dont even know where to begin. ummmm... ok, so this woman moves into this apartment with an old rotary phone, but she has a cell phone. then all the phone calls, but she doesn't try to find a new apartment. and when the brick wall went up, wouldn't that be some sign of watch what you say or do? im sorry, but who in the hell talks shit back to the weird phone calls from 40 years ago when its obviously having an effect in the future? then in walks the douche bag ass new love interest with his doc brown back to the future explanation, we meet the ass hole abusive ex that gives the two women something in common. then a bunch of throw away bullshit. Next problem, so the new love talks to the gardener, helps fix the lawn mower, shares a joke or two. the rose woman from the past cuts her finger off, buries it, and the new love guy is all talking about it, picks up the phone and talks to rose. now the problem. he had already met the gardener, he talked to past rose, but when Mary runs to the apartment the gardener (or was he a groundskeeper? idfk) was living in, no gardener, some woman with a kid claims to have been living there for a few months. and the new love guy didn't remember the gardener?!?! fuck that. Mary had memories of the pantry before the wallpaper and the brick wall, this douche practically just as involved by answering the phone, has no memory of the gardener he met? so she goes home with him, eventually returns. the phone rings, its rose, and he found john as a kid, and killed him too. so now no more new love interest..... *sigh* (it really is going that way.) next, rose finds.... 1979 Mary!!!!!! and rose says "dont you remember got to be careful around the hot cooking oil" and future mary heres young mary scream, and develops burn marks almost instantly. and it keeps going like this until guess who shows up? its future rose with a machette.......... 80 some year old woman breaking doors trying to kill future mary, when it could have happened 40 years ago and the movie would have been over, but that would call for a sequel and i honestly regret seeing this one in the first place, god forbid there is a sequel. and how does it end? Mary kills her abusive ex after he enters her apartment. and hides the body behind the brick.... with the 5 year old .... 40 years ago ..... corpse of John her once new love, and the gardener, and Bobby. and yes, it went there. the overused plot, the using of a rotary phone on landline when Mary had a cellphone, no thought of changing the number, didn't think to just leave the phone unplugged, returned to the apartment, constantly talked shit to a woman 40 years in the past who apparently is down to murder, the gardener, the douchey doc brown love interest, the doc brown skewed tangent explanation itself, the stupid flashing pics.... it happened a couple of times, the one i remember being a dream, and its that couple of seconds flash through a few pictures..... which includes your average every day generic skull, and worst of all, way to predictable. every scene of the movie. for example, she tells 40 years in the past rose the full name of John, and surprise! to get back at Mary in the future, she found and killed John when he was 5. all because he interfered.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4705731426489274324.post-63804688417222588982012-10-08T09:15:36.381-04:002012-10-08T09:15:36.381-04:00Good question. Movies are big on full-circle endings, especially horror. That's just what I think, anyway.

As for the constant shots of the A.C., I couldn't tell you why. Maybe the movie wanted you to feel like there was no relief from the events unfolding? I just pulled that out of the sky, though.

Thanks for reading!TEOShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05665899455536414080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4705731426489274324.post-46103307945754946002012-10-08T01:25:12.997-04:002012-10-08T01:25:12.997-04:00Hey. great review, I had no questions about any of...Hey. great review, I had no questions about any of the logicality of the film but just wanted to know your opinion on the ending. There seems to be a great consensus among review sites to throw spoilers randomly about but ironically become too smug to give a strong stanced opinion on the ending. Is it as simple as it seems to you? Mary's damaged psyche and outrageous experience have driven her to a point of tipping madness? She kills her husband and hides him in the bricked pantry, the end? (Obviously an over simplification but a paraphrasing none the less).

Also, if you happen to know, what was the symbolism of the broken air conditioner constantly reappearing throughout the film?
